Synthesis, characterization, and crystallization of nanostructured materials

The Smith group uses the tools of synthesis and self-assembly to design nanostructured materials and surfaces. By controlling order at the molecular level, we establish the structure-property relationships that determine a material's function. Our aim is to rationally design materials for applications including catalysis, crystal nucleation, and water treatment.
